Executive Director

 

Summary
The Executive Director (ED) provides overall organizational leadership in collaboration with the EFSETN staff and board of directors. The ED, in collaboration with the staff & Board of Directors, engages in strategic planning, fundraising, and innovative and creative partnerships to help drive organizational growth and community awareness of the organization and its mission. Primary responsibilities include:  

  • Organizational leadership,

  • Fundraising,

  • Grant writing,

  • Community awareness,

  • Partnership development, and

  • External communications.

Oversight
The ED reports directly to the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee Board of Directors.

  • Education Coordinator

 

Primary Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership 

  • Maintain an organizational climate and culture of excellence, inclusion, respect, and accountability. 

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and leadership staff to support the planning and implementation of strategic plan goals and action items. 

  • Maintain oversight of operations, in collaboration with the staff with support and oversight from the Board of Directors, to foster and sustain excellence in serving clients and the community. 

  • Manage staff and resources of EFSETN. This includes policy and procedure management and oversight of staff selection, onboarding, the establishment of goals and performance expectations, annual review of direct reports, ongoing training, corrective actions, and if necessary – termination. 

  • Enforce existing policies of the organization. Identify and develop, with the Board of Directors, new policies and procedures as needed. 

  • Assign staff members to participate in Board committee meetings as appropriate. 

  • Ensure compliance with Epilepsy Foundation National, and any local, state and federal reporting.

  • Identify organizational needs and engage with external assistance for development (e.g., interns, part-time staff, consultants, etc.). 

Fundraising 

  • Initiate, plan and implement all aspects of fundraising, including grant writing, development of long-term strategic partnerships, annual giving campaigns, and fundraising events to drive growth and expansion.

  • Develop and implement comprehensive, strategic communication and marketing plans to ensure continued and increased support from the community, the United Way, and other stakeholders for EFSETN. 

  • Engage with board members and volunteers for prospective donor discovery, engagement, and stewardship.

  • Oversee the implementation and assessment of large and small fundraising events. 

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward funds from local foundations and organizations via grant proposals and timely reports and ongoing interactions with donors and funding agencies. 

  • Manage correspondence with and stewardship of current and prospective donors. 

  • Initiate and oversee the development and distribution of marketing materials and messages including social media outreach, fundraising materials, annual fund mailing materials, and others. 

 

Organizational Financial Planning & Management

  • Prepare and present, in conjunction with the staff and board treasurer monthly finance reports.

  • Create and manage the annual budget. 

  • Liaison to the Tennessee Department of Health.

Board Engagement 

  • Serve as the liaison to the Board of Directors, attend all board meetings, provide reports, fulfilling the long-term goals of the foundation, and engage appropriate staff members in supporting board committees. 

  • Maintain open communication with the Board of Directors. Incorporate and maximize the talents available on the Board. 

  • Prepare and present monthly ED reports for the Board of Directors. 

Community Engagement

  • Cultivate professional relationships with stakeholders, both current and potential, including early childhood and related agencies in the Chattanooga area in order to make proper referrals, engage partners, and inform planning and strategic directions.

  • Provide client support by providing resources, connections to physicians, doctors, support groups, etc. 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for community outreach, training and awareness sessions, including a calendar for educational outreach sessions, Connections support group, and other community events.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in Nonprofit Management, Human Services, Healthcare, Communications or a related field. 

  • At least three years of experience in a leadership role at a nonprofit or healthcare-related organization.

  • Capacity to provide systems-level assessment and foster ongoing organizational innovation and improvement. 

  • A growth-oriented mindset with a strong capacity to build and empower staff members to maximize organizational effectiveness. 

  • A positive attitude and desire to help our clients lead a fuller life.

  • Demonstrated capacity to raise funds from individual donors and philanthropic foundations. 

  • Financial management capacity and experience using financial/bookkeeping software. 

  • Experience in managing staff, engaging partners and volunteers, and collaborating with Board members. 

  • Written and verbal communication skills including accuracy and persuasion. 

  • Willingness to learn new things and take initiative for professional development and growth. 

  • Ability to interact and speak with diverse groups of people promoting EFSETN’s mission and services. 

  • Experience with using typical business programs and software such as Microsoft Office products; ability to take initiative to explore and learn technology resources to support the organization’s mission.
