The Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee is a voluntary, non-profit organization formed in 1977 to meet the needs of people with epilepsy, their families and concerned individuals in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.
By providing quality education, information and support services and as a full affiliate of the national Epilepsy Foundation, we are dedicated to the prevention, control, and cure of epilepsy through research, education, advocacy and services.
A person dealing with seizures needs understanding, acceptance and support from family, friends and co-workers. The Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee is working to encourage that support by informing our community about epilepsy.
- 2 in every 100 Americans have epilepsy with over 181,000 new cases every year.
- Over 20,800 people with epilepsy live in Southeast Tennessee and
Northwest Georgia.
- 10% of the American population will experience a seizure in their lifetimes;
3% will develop epilepsy by age 75.
- In nearly 70% of cases of epilepsy, there is no known cause.
- 300,000 cases of epilepsy affect children age 14 and under.
- Approximately 60% achieve remission after the first year; 15% achieve control
at a later date, but in 25% seizures resist control and become intractable.
For this group comprising hundreds of thousands of people, many of them children - epilepsy remains a formidable barrier to normal life, affecting educational attainment, employment, and personal fulfillment.
- Women with epilepsy face special issues throughout their lives.
- Stigma remains a fact of life for many with epilepsy, fueling discrimination and isolation from the mainstream of American life.
