On November 5 & 6, the 1st Annual Chattanooga Connections Conference brought together families of children with disabilities. A collaboration of area non-profits had been planning this event for more than a year. Particpating partners included (but were not limited to) Siskin Children's Institute, the Chattanooga Austism Center, TEAM Centers, Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association, LifeLine Ministries, Signal Centers, Chattanooga Parks and Recreation, Chattanooga Head Start and the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee.
Around 50 adults attended the day's many educational sessions which included topics such as caregiving, long term financial planning, stress, social skills, recreational opportunities and more. Childcare was provided for both kids with disabilities and their siblings for a "Sib Celebration."
On a survey given to the parents who attended, 100% of them said that they would return next year to the same event because of the valuable information and networking opportunities.
A representative from the Epilepsy Foundation helped to plan this event and had the opportunity to meet more parents who have children with seizures. If you are a parent of a child with epilepsy, you may want to consider coming to this conference next year. It has not yet been scheduled, but if you are interested, contact our offices at (423) 634-1772 or continue to check the conference webpage.
